Cougar volleyball team wins sectional
The Cougars defeated Mishawaka Marian in the finals Saturday to win the 2021 sectional championship game.
Haley Robinson led with 13 kills, followed by Ellie Michiaels with 10. Emma Fleck dished out 34 assists, while Michiaels had 3 blocks. Josie Troy, Robinson and Delaney Daniels each contributed 9 digs.
The Cougars defeated South Bend Washington to advance to the sectional final.
New Prairie sees action next Saturday at regional.
Slicer volleyball team wins sectional
The Slicers were firing on all cylinders Saturday against the Cavemen in the sectional championship match.
The blockers were effective, helping to steer the Cavemen attacks through the lanes, where their defenders were digging. Bella Meier spread the ball around and the dynamic attack kept Mishawaka guessing. The serves were aggressive and wore Mishawaka down.
La Porte had defeated Plymouth to advance to the sectional final.
The Slicers take on Penn next Saturday as La Porte hosts the regional event.

New Prairie’s Lillian Zelasko is regional champion
New Prairie junior Lillian Zelasko earned the title of cross country regional champion Saturday. She took an early lead, pulled the front pack along with her and was able to hang on to that lead all the way through to the finish, adding more distance between herself and the others throughout the last mile.
The Cougars placed 8th as a team.
Lilly will be the only girl advancing to the New Prairie Semistate as an individual.
Although they did not advance to semistate, freshman Emma True and junior Lyla Alvey ran personal bests on a very muddy and sloppy course. Freshmen Maggie Kieszkowski and Elaine Zelasko were also very close to running personal best times as well through the tough course conditions.

Cougar boys cross country team places 6th at regional
The New Prairie boys cross country team placed 6th at the IHSAA Chesterton Regional Saturday, and will not advance as a team to next weekend’s semistate race.
Ethan Walden finished 18th in 17:20, Logan Thibodeau finished 36th in 17:54, and Dan O’Laughlin finished 38th in 18:03 – these three Cougars will advance to semistate and compete as individuals.
Brenden Oden finished 39th in 18:04, Dan Reshan was 40th in 18:05, Kyle Newcomb was 45th in 18:14, and Joe Tuszysnki was 66th in 19:21.
Next Saturday’s semistate will be hosted by New Prairie.
Cougar football team falls to Elkhart
A lost fumble at the end of a long drive and a blocked field goal attempt in the first half proved costly to the Cougars in a 21-14 loss at Elkhart Friday.
Sophomore quarterback Marshall Kmiecik ran for a touchdown and threw to junior Kole Staley for another. Kmiecik carried 17 times for 72 yards. Junior Noah Mungia ran the ball 17 times for 90 yards.
Juniors Tayvion Ortman and Nathan Andrysiak led Cougar tacklers with 12 and 10, respectively. Senior Hunter Groves intercepted a Lion pass.
LPHS boys take 2nd at cross country regional
The La Porte boys cross country team earned a trip to the New Prairie Semistate next weekend after a 2nd-place team finish Saturday at the Chesterton Regional.
Senior Cole Raymond successfully defended his regional title by winning the race in a time of 16:08. Also earning all-regional honors were junior Jay Pillai (4th) and sophomore Brayden Sobecki (5th).
Rounding out the scoring for the Slicers were junior Stevie Klimczak (29th) and senior Mason Tulacz (34th).

Slicer girls take 3rd at cross country regional
The La Porte girls cross country team earned a spot in next week’s New Prairie Semistate with a 3rd-place finish Saturday at the Chesterton Regional.
All 5 of LaPorte’s scorers earned top-30 finishes, including junior Brenna Sobecki (4th), freshman Lila Gillisse (7th), freshman Faith Spain (23rd), senior Ella Dubbs (26th), and freshman Natalie Poston (27th).
