Maui County Mayor Michael Victorino announced at his news conference Friday loosened COVID-19 restrictions on fans being allowed to attend sporting events.
The new rules, which are to go into effect today, are outlined on the county website.
For outdoor venues, no limit on fans was listed for individual venues — the most that can gather together in a single group within the venue is 25 people.
“Spectators are allowed and groups are limited to 25 persons not sharing the same address. Spectators are encouraged, but not required, to wear masks,” the document reads in part.
For indoor venues, a limit of 50 percent of capacity was announced, with groups limited to 10 people. Spectators are required to wear facial coverings at all times — as are players, coaches and officials — and no food or beverages will be allowed, except for water.
Maui Interscholastic League officials said Friday that an announcement should be forthcoming as soon as Monday on how the new rules affect high school athletic events in Maui County.
For football, the MIL uses Sue Cooley and King Kekaulike stadiums that are state Department of Education facilities, private Kanaiaupuni Stadium on the Kamehameha Schools Maui campus, and county-run War Memorial Stadium.
Most of the gyms used in the MIL are DOE or private facilities.
The first football game in the 2021 MIL season is Friday when Maui High plays Lahainaluna at Sue Cooley Stadium. Next Saturday, Baldwin plays King Kekaulike at War Memorial. All games begin at 7 p.m.
