Ryder Cup standings 2021: Updated results for Team USA vs. Team Europe at Whistling Straits – Sporting News

For the second time in two decades, the Ryder Cup has been thrown off its pattern.

Since returning from World War II in 1947, the Ryder Cup had been played every odd year up until 2001, when it was pushed back to 2002 in the wake of the Sept. 11 attacks. Now, after it was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it is back in odd years with golfers from the United States and Europe set to converge on Whistling Straits in Haven, Wisconsin.

The United States has historically dominated the Ryder Cup, having won 26 matches of the 42 in which it has participated, but Team Europe has been strong since it first started playing in 1979. In 20 matches, Team Europe has won 11 of them, including seven of the nine played since the turn of the century.

Who is winning the Ryder Cup in 2021? Sporting News will be updating the standings throughout the weekend’s events.

The team that wins the Ryder Cup will be the first to reach at least 14 1/2 points. Teams earn a single point for each match won, or they earn a half point in the case of a tie. There are 28 possible points, so should the two teams end with 14 points each, the team that previously won the Ryder Cup — Team Europe — will be claimed the champion.

Fourball

One of the three events in the Ryder Cup is fourball, where two-man teams play on the same hole. Each member plays their own ball, but the team only counts the lowest of the two scores on each hole. Teams win the hole by having the lowest score on each one, unless there is a tie, in which case the hole is halved.

Foursomes

The two-man teams continue in foursomes, but instead of each player playing their own ball, the teams each share one, with the two alternating who plays each hole. So one player will take the shots on the odd-numbered holes and another will play the even-numbered holes. Again, the lowest score on each hole wins and the hole is halved if tied.

Singles

This one is simple: one player will compete against another from every, and the player with the lowest score on each hole wins the hole. Ties result in the hole being halved.
