Marauders get offense in gear in LHAC win | News, Sports, Jobs – Altoona Mirror

The Bishop Guilfoyle Catholic locker room was rocking and rolling Saturday night following its game against Somerset, and for good reason.

Having totaled just 34 points in its last three games, BG got its offense untracked against the winless Golden Eagles.

The Marauders fell behind 7-3 early but quickly answered when Drew Abraham broke into the clear for a 76-yard touchdown on BG’s first play following the ensuing kickoff.

It was the first of several big plays that resulted in a 45-24 BG victory at Mansion Park.

Player of the game 1: In addition to his 76-yard TD run, Abraham added a 74-yard scoring run in the fourth quarter to finish with 169 yards on just seven carries.

Abraham: “It was perfect blocking from every one of the line. Our work’s paying off. We’re getting better. We’re nowhere near what we need to be, but we’re starting to click a little bit.”

Player of the game 2: Quarterback Karson Kiesewetter accounted for three touchdowns. He ran for 88 yards and two touchdowns on 11 carries and completed 5-of-9 passes for 109 yards and a score.

BG coach Justin Wheeler: “We’ve been waiting to have one of those breakout games. Get some of our guys out in space. It’s nice to see the work translate into some big plays. Our offensive line played well. We’re playing some guys trying to get them one way so they stay fresh, and they played a good game against a very good defensive line.”

Plays of the game: In addition to Abraham’s two long runs, Kiesewetter threw a 35-yard touchdown pass to Dominic Yanoshak late in the first quarter. Yanoshak leaped to snatch Kiesewetter’s high pass out of the air over a Somerset defender at the Eagles’ 10, spun away from the defender and went into the end zone untouched for the score.

Kiesewetter then squeezed through a narrow lane in the second quarter for a 28-yard TD run off left tackle one play after Vincent Ciofarri’s interception gave the Marauders great field position.

Unsung hero: BG kicker Deven Wyandt booted a 35-yard field goal to open the scoring and was good on all six extra point attempts. He also put five of eight kickoffs in the end zone for a touchback.

Wheeler: “He’s incredible. He puts it where we want him to put it. Every week he’s been our special teams player of the week, because he’s done that in every game. Plus, every time we get the ball to the 30 in, we’re going to kick a field goal. He’s good from 50. When we get down there, we know we’re going to get points.”

Notable: Despite being down 38-10 at the end of the third quarter, the Eagles continued to fight, putting together two long scoring drives in the final 12 minutes. Ethan Hemminger capped an eight-play, 80-yard drive with a 13-yard TD pass to William Reeping in the front corner of the end zone. Somerset followed that up with a 12-play, 74-drive that Tyler Zimmerman finished off with a 7-yard TD run. … Somerset only dressed 25 players for the game.

Somerset coach Brian Basile: “We haven’t been healthy. We just can’t get over the COVID thing, but we will. I’m proud of the effort. I love the fight in these guys. We’re going to keep bringing it and reload for the second half of the season.”

Records: Somerset (0-4); Bishop Guilfoyle (3-2).

Next week: Somerset hosts Bishop McCort on Friday. Bishop Guilfoyle visits Westmont Hilltop on Saturday afternoon.
