EUGENE, Ore. — Each year, Sports Business Journal honors 50 women in sports for their leadership, innovation, and impact throughout the industry. The 11th class of trailblazing women announced this week by SBJ includes the University of Oregon’s Lisa Peterson, who is in her 10th year in Eugene and serves as the Deputy Athletic Director, Senior Women’s Administrator, and Title IX Coordinator for Oregon Athletics.
According to the SBJ story announcing the 2021 Game Changers, this year’s class is comprised of “thought leaders throughout their organizations – teams, leagues and colleges; agencies and brands; law firms and media companies, and more – and their impressive work extends from events and venues to social responsibility and diversity, equity and inclusion. As their achievements have come in a largely male-dominated industry, these Game Changers serve as role models and mentors to young women striving to enter and succeed in sports business.”
In addition to her role as the Title IX Coordinator for UO Athletics, Peterson oversees sports medicine, student-athlete development, and information technology while also serving as the sport administrator for women’s basketball, softball, lacrosse, acrobatics and tumbling, soccer, volleyball, and beach volleyball. Both UO women’s basketball and volleyball made the Sweet 16 in 2021, with acrobatics and tumbling recording another top-five finish and softball advancing to the NCAA Regional Final.
“Lisa is an outstanding leader with a sharp focus on supporting student-athletes and coaches,” said Oregon athletic director Rob Mullens. “She has had an accomplished career, and she certainly deserves to see her great work and tremendous impact on people and the industry recognized.”
Peterson serves on the Pac-12 IMPACT Committee, the social outreach initiative for the conference, as well as the Community and Inclusion committee for UO Athletics. She is the chief liaison with the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee at Oregon and was also one of the leaders on all educational programs and conversations within the department and with student-athletes on the topic of social justice in 2020. She has also served on numerous national committees, including as the chair of the United States Olympic and Paralympic Legislative Task Force, a group that brought new policies supporting national team athletes into adoption in January 2020. She currently is a member of the Division I Women’s Basketball Committee and previously chaired the Division I Volleyball Committee.
Peterson also played a prominent role in all of UO Athletics’ COVID-19 response efforts and protocols over the past 17 months, including serving as one of the chief liaisons with state and local public health officials and coordinating all COVID-related communications between UO Athletics’ medical team, coaching staff, department staff, and student-athletes.
“I am grateful to be a part of such an incredible group of women in this year’s Game Changers class,” said Peterson. “This industry provides a tremendous opportunity to encourage, support, and celebrate all of the amazing people we encounter, and I will continue to advocate for positive change at every opportunity.”
The SBJ Game Changers Class of 2021 will be honored in a special section in the magazine on Sept. 27 and also recognized during the annual Game Changers Conference on Oct. 20 in New York City.
