Corey Hawkins is starring in the functional adaptation of the Broadway musical “Color Purple”.
The 32-year-old actor was tapped to star in a Warner Bros. Pictures project. The project features a big screen musical based on Steven Spielberg’s 1985 film of the same name.
Corey is set to play the role of Harpo Johnson, played by Willard E. Pugh in the original movie.
Marcus Gardley wrote the script based on Alice Walker’s 1982 novel Broadway take. The story focuses on African-American families and relationships in Georgia in the early 20th century. The musical features jazz, ragtime, gospel, blues and African rhythms.
Spielberg is making a film with Oprah Winfrey (original starring), Scott Sanders and Quincy Jones. Scheduled to be released in 2023.
After playing Benny in the Lin-Manuel Miranda “In the Heights” film take, it marks another musical film by Corey.
Corey has also starred in André Øvredal’s new film, Last Voyage of the Demeter.
The story is based on a single chapter of Bram Stoker’s classic horror novels “Dracula” and “Captain’s Log”. It is the story of Demeter, a Russian boat chartered to carry private cargo from Carpathia to London.
The film details a bizarre event that struck a fateful crew as they attempted to survive a sea voyage while they were stalked every night by a terrifying being aboard a ship.
When it finally arrived at Whitby Harbor, it was abandoned and had no trace of its crew.
