Syracuse, N.Y. — High school athletes in Section III are free to compete in spring sports sectionals this week without worrying about masks.
According the the New York State Public High School Athletic Association, new Department of Health guidelines now state that facemasks are not required to be worn outdoors on school grounds, including during outdoor school sports.
“The news we have been waiting for,” the NYSPHSAA tweeted.
Previously, face coverings were required unless athletes couldn’t physically tolerate them. Many athletes decided to forgo them on those grounds.
Individual schools may require their athletes to keep wearing masks, however. Fans and other visitors to games may not be precluded from voluntarily wearing masks if they want.
