PORTLAND, Ind. (Fort Wayne’s NBC) – A man in Portland, Ind., is looking for someone to buy his car so that he can buy thousands of dollars in gear for his technology students.
Andrew Wellman just started his teaching career at East Jay Elementary School and he says he’s quickly formed a bond with his students.
“We have a small budget and that budget is allocated before it hits the technology room,” Wellman said.
Wellman went onto Facebook letting people know that his car is up for sale.
“I have no doubt that we could fund raise through the school, but it would take years of selling pies and shirts to get where we wanna go,” Wellman said. “I have over 500 kids in here who are eager and ready to learn and I’m ready to teach, so I looked at what I could do.”
Wellman’s push is now going beyond just selling his 2021 Honda Fit. He also started a GoFundMe page, which has a goal of raising $10,000.
“The car is great, but I’d much rather have cool things like robots and 3D printers and lasers to teach these kids with,” Wellman said.
Wellman grew up in Indiana, left for a few years, then recently returned. His newfound passion for teaching comes not long after tragedy hit him.
“I was diagnosed with cancer,” Wellman said. “It was a rare and aggressive cancer about five years ago so we left my design and engineering career and traveled the country with whatever time we had left.”
Wellman is now in remission, but it was a battle that put things in perspective.
“After cancer, possessions really don’t mean anything to me anymore,” Wellman said. “The car is great, it gets me where I need to go, but I don’t care about it.”
Wellman said he hope that he can get the money soon and he encourages his students to dream big and to not be afraid to fail.
