Teenager Darnera Frazier, who recorded the murder of George Floyd, received a special award from the Pulitzer Prize Committee on Friday, demonstrating the wide range of roles citizens can play in journalism through social media.
Gannet’s USA TODAY Network publication also won the Pulitzer Prize for journalism on Friday and was selected as a finalist in two more categories.
The board, which oversees the annual award named The Indianapolis Star (also known as the Indister), was selected as a co-winner of the Pulitzer National Reporting along with the Chicago-based Invisible Institute, AL.com and The Marshall Project. Louisville Courier-Journal, also part of the USA TODAY network, was selected as a finalist in two categories, Public Service and Breaking News, for comprehensive and clear coverage of Breonna Taylor’s police killings.
The Courier Journal has been awarded by the Pulitzer Prize for the second consecutive year. In 2020, the publication won the Breaking News Award for reporting on the last-minute Governor’s amnesty in Kentucky.
