Celebration of Science Day 

In recognizing the role scientists have played in the battle against COVID-19, the Center for Science and Industry (COSI) will conduct a citywide celebration on Saturday.

The “Celebration of Science Day” will be a day-long event that’s open to all community members, families and organizations. Along with commemorating the science center’s reopening this week, the celebration will also serve as an opportunity for people to show their gratitude for the diligent work and sacrifices made by scientists over the past 15 months and take part in activities that support science literacy.

People who are interested in participating are encouraged to share posts and photos on social media using hashtags like “#ThankYouScience and #cosireopens to potentially win prizes throughout the weekend, including tickets, family memberships and COSI Connects Kits.

Monday Evening Jazz to return

Vaughn Wiester’s 22-Piece Famous Jazz Orchestra, which has showcased jazz musicians from central Ohio for 23 years, will resume Monday  at the Clintonville Woman’s Club, 3951 N. High St.

This summer will be a spotlight series of the vocalists who have appeared alongside the orchestra through the years, including Kelly Crum Delaveris.

Each event will take place from 7:30 to 10 p.m., with no reservations required. Tickets cost $10, or $5 for students.

And in recognizing COVID-19 guidelines, “uninoculated patrons” are asked to wear masks.

Breakaway Fest lineup announced 

As one of the largest live and in-person music festivals to take place in Ohio this year, the Breakaway Music Festival will be filled with a collection of artists ranging from international EDM artists to Billboard chart-toppers. 

Set to take place Sept. 3-4 at Historic Crew Stadium, the sixth annual event will showcase dozens of acts. 

Norwegian-born artist Kygo, headlines Friday evening. Powered by singles “Firestone” and “Stole the Show,” he emerged as Spotify’s “Breakout Artist of 2015.” And since introducing himself in 2013, he has amassed over 15 billion cumulative global audio and video streams and 3.3 billion YouTube views.

Set to headline Saturday evening is Illenium. The Denver-based producer has elevated dance music with his expansive sound that mixes elements of celestial electronic, mellow alternative, rock-fuel dubstep and other genres. 

Other artists rounding out the weekend include 24kGoldn, Gryffin, Chelsea Cutler, Two Feet, Elderbrook, Jessie Murph, Sofi Tukker, Sam Feldt,  Alexander 23, ilo ilo, Channel Tres, John Summit, Sam Blacky, Teddy Rose, Sidepiece, Ship Wrek, EV and more to be announced.

Jazz & Rib Fest BBQ Week and Park Pop-Ups

As large central Ohio events, such as the annual Jazz & Rib Fest, have been reimagined to support local businesses and performing artists, the Columbus Recreation and Parks Department plans to host two citywide events this summer: Jazz & Rib Fest BBQ Week and Park Pop-Ups.

The first Park Pop-Ups event will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. beginning Saturday and continuing each Saturday through Aug. 28. The event will offer free live local entertainment.  

The Jazz & Rib Fest BBQ Week, July 19-25, will be a weeklong celebration of grilled, smoked and spit-roasted foods at participating Columbus restaurants, taprooms and food trucks.

Residents are encouraged to follow Columbus Recreation and Parks Department on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram to learn more about the weekly Park Pop-Ups. Jazz & Rib Fest BBQ Week information will be available on the Jazz & Rib Fest Facebook page and on the Scioto Mile Instagram account.

CXC 2021 to be a mix of in-person and virtual

This year’s Cartoon Crossroads Columbus (CXC), the international showcase for cartoon art, will be a mix of in-person and virtual events from Sept. 30 to Oct. 3.

After being completely online last year, the annual festival will feature a slate of in-person programs.

The 7th annual festival will include: Chris Samnee, known for his work on “Daredevil,” “Fire Power” and ” Jonna and the Unpossible Monsters” and Victoria Jamieson, the author of “Roller Girl” and co-author of the acclaimed “When Stars Are Scattered,” which she created with Omar Mohamed who will also be a special guest; and more.
