Norway is dropping the Oxford/AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine but will study whether it will allow people voluntarily to choose the suspended Johnson & Johnson jab. Young adults will jump the queue after a rising number of Covid-19 cases, particularly in connection with often boisterous high school graduation parties, Norwegian prime minister Erna Solberg said.

Two in three new coronavirus infections in the US are estimated to be a result of the Covid-19 variant first identified in the UK, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The top US public health agency said in its most recent data that 66 per cent of cases detected in the two weeks ended April 24 were of the B.1.1.7 lineage.

Flows of remittances to developing countries have held up during the pandemic, helping to offset a sharp fall in foreign direct investment, according to a World Bank report. The report said remittances to low and middle-income countries defied expectations, reaching $540bn in 2020, a fall of just 1.6 per cent from the $548bn in 2019.

Australia is in line for 25m doses of Moderna’s Covid-19 vaccine as the country seeks to accelerate its vaccination rollout and diversify sources of jabs beyond OxfordAstraZeneca. The US company said it would send 10m doses of its vaccine against the original strain of the virus this year, as well as 15m of its updated “variant booster vaccine” in 2022.

After more than one year and 420,000 deaths, the Brazilian government has launched an awareness campaign about the importance of preventative measures against Covid-19, including social distancing, wearing masks and vaccinations. The campaign is being spearheaded by Marcelo Queiroga, health minister, who has defended the use of masks despite voluble opposition to their use from his boss President Jair Bolsonaro.
